Why You Need to Watch the Flag Retreat at Magic Kingdom

Today is Flag Day here in the United States. It’s a day to honor our flag. The flag that symbolizes freedom and the hard work it took to found this country. There’s a lot of patriotism and American heritage to be found in Disney parks. Mainly because Walt Disney loved the country and wanted to honor it. Places like Liberty Square, the American Adventure Pavilion and attractions like the Hall of Presidents honor the nation. In the middle of town square at the Magic Kingdom you’ll see the flag pole. Here everyday you’ll see the Flag Retreat. In honor of Flag Day I thought I’d share what it is and why I think you need to see it.

For me the little hidden things at Disney are what I am fascinated with. The small details or the interesting facts you learn always make me appreciate the place. There are certain events that happen that aren’t very well known that make me feel this way too. The Flag Retreat is one of them. It’s something where you have to be in the right place at the right time to see it. It happens everyday at 5 p.m. at the flag pole on Main Street U.S.A. If you’ve never been around there at 5 p.m. then you might not know it ever existed.

It’s a thank you to veterans and symbolizes the sacrifices they’ve made for their country. It first beings with the Pledge of Allegiance then the flag is lowered as the Star Spangled Banner plays. Members of the Magic Kingdom Color Guard fold the flag while the crowd is lead in a singing of “God Bless America”. The most touching part is when the flag is presented to a veteran who happened to be a guest that day. A short procession down Main Street U.S.A. concludes the event.

This occurs every single day and while it is short I think it really puts things into perspective. Your able to enjoy this amazing theme park because of the soldiers who fought for the freedom of the nation it resides in. Even if you aren’t from the United States I think you can appreciate this daily event.

Next time your in the park be sure to check it out.
